MANON GARIBAY, Guillermo José. The political theology of Thomas Aquinas (800 years after his birth). Estud. polít. (Méx.) [online]. 2025, n.66, pp.20-34. Epub 07-Ago-2026. ISSN 0185-1616. https://doi.org/10.22201/fcpys.24484903e.2025.66.94081.
800 years ago, Thomas Aquinas was born, saint (1323), doctor of the church and principal theologian of Catholicism, according to the encyclical Aeternis Patris. Nowadays, it is surprising that the medieval ideas of Aquinas resurfaced at a time when Darwin's evolutionism, the modern anti-creationist physics of Jean-Baptiste Lamarck, and the experimental psychology of Wilhelm Wundt were spreading. While his ontology and theory of knowledge are obsolete in this 21st century (and already in the 19th century), his political ideas are not. In his time, he represented the papal political aspirations for a political and cultural preeminence of Christianity, and now, in the 21st century, he represents the ambitions of certain countries and rulers for absolute imperial power.
