The absorption of the GDR within the institutional structure of the FRG in October 1990 was the result of the confluence of three factors: a) the dynamics of the bipolar international order; b) the peculiar organization of their party systems and the nature of their semi-sovereign states; c) the irredentist nature of the policy of the FRG towards the GDR. These variables modeled the format of the unification process in 1990, which in turn influenced the process of regime change started in 1989 and inhibited the endogenous process of democratization of the GDR.
