Abstract

MACIAS OSORNO, Gabriel. Music does not Travel Alone: Imprints of Flamenco and the Spanish Republican Exile in Mexican Cinematography of the Golden Age. An. Inst. Investig. Estét [online]. 2025, vol.47, n.127, pp.235-264.  Epub Feb 13, 2026. ISSN 0185-1276.  https://doi.org/10.22201/iie.18703062e.2025.127.2922.

The article focuses on the Spanish Republican exile in Mexico, highlighting the presence of flamenco performers within this contingent and their participation in Mexican cinema. It relates how and why this industry produced around twenty films featuring flamenco in the 1940s, a time characterized by the production of films with Mexicanist references as part of the so-called cultural nationalism. The aim is to set aside a certain canonical memory constructed with respect to this exodus so as to shed light on other facets, expressions and actors. Additionally, it is pointed out that music is not per se neutral but, rather, articulates with specific contexts. Hence the flamenco that arrived in Mexico as part of a forced migration (exile), negotiates, assumes, but also tenses the political, social, ideological and cultural structures established in Mexican cinematography.

Keywords : Music and migrations; Republican Spanish exile; Flamenco in Mexico, Cultural nationalism; Mexican cinema; Golden age.
