This article shows the painter José Rodríguez Carnero to have been a key player in its consolidation; from his arrival in Puebla, he initiated a series of strategies that made him the leading painter in that city, creating a guild of artists, and exercising an important influence on the style that would mark painting in Puebla throughout the eighteenth century.
