The article narrates the biography and career of the academic engraver Manuel López López (1773-ca. 1840) in light of unpublished lawsuits. It first outlines his history as a boarding student of the Royal Academy of the Three Noble Arts of San Carlos and summarizes his early works. Then, drawing on newly discovered litigations documents, the article traces the growth and decline of his printing press within the economic and social environment of Mexico, towards the end of the viceroyalty. Finally, the documentary appendix transcribes an inventory of engraved plates at López’s press and a financial report from 1820.
