Abstract

HERNANDEZ SOUBERVIELLE, J. Armando. Radii Solis: The Immaculism of Fray Pedro de Alva y Astorga in an Engraving by Pieter de Jode II and a Painting by Pedro López Calderón. An. Inst. Investig. Estét [online]. 2025, vol.47, n.126, pp.83-120.  Epub Sep 01, 2025. ISSN 0185-1276.  https://doi.org/10.22201/iie.18703062e.2025.126.2885.

This article analyzes the work of the Franciscan Pedro de Alva y Astorga, a strong promoter of the cause of the Immaculate Conception in the 17th century; it focuses on the book Radii Solis and the engraving that accompanies it, since this provided the reference that inspired a canvas by Pedro López Calderón found in what was once northern New Spain. The article examines a dialogue that can be established between a Franciscan recognized for his staunch defense of the mystery of the Immaculate Conception, a little-known flamenco engraver, and an engraving that synthesizes the Immaculist thought of padre De Alva y Astorga. It also recalls the years spent in defense of his ideas and suffering constant harassment, and how this served as the basis for a painting signed in Mexico in 1731.

Keywords : Immaculate Conception; Pedro de Alva y Astorga; Pedro López Calderón; Flemish engravers; Pieter de Jode; Leuven; San Luis Potosí.
