Abstract

COHEN, David; ALVAREZ-WHITE, María Cecilia  and  OMAR FERNANDEZ, Mario. Centuries of Flowers, Crowns, and Nosegays. A Material Culture Study of Crowned Nuns Paintings from Santa Inés de Montepulciano Monastery in Bogotá. An. Inst. Investig. Estét [online]. 2025, vol.47, n.126, pp.55-82.  Epub Sep 01, 2025. ISSN 0185-1276.  https://doi.org/10.22201/iie.18703062e.2025.126.2884.

The study proposes a new interpretation of the floral crowns and nosegays in the portraits of the nuns of the Santa Inés de Montepulciano community in Bogotá. This pictorial manifestation arose in Colombia possibly in the 17th century and extended to the 19th. The material evidence recovered based on the study of 16 portraits of nuns, using multispectral imaging techniques and instrumental analysis, suggests several moments in the decoration of floral ornaments, especially in 18th-century paintings. The representation of flowers and their evolution would be linked to the development of scientific thought in the Americas and the Botanical Expedition to the New Kingdom of Granada.

Keywords : American colonial painting; material cultural studies; conservation sciences; Botanical Expedition; New Kingdom of Granada.
