Resumen

CHANFON OLMOS, Carlos. El Plano de Sankt Gallen. An. Inst. Investig. Estét [online]. 2001, vol.23, n.78, pp.51-75. ISSN 0185-1276.

The Sankt Gallen Map, a document dating from the IX century of Charlemagne, is examined in line with findings and subsequent considerations following the publication of a study by Walter Horn and Ernest Born. The data obtained from recent research is used to reflect on the fact that the document actually represents a series of differing functions rather than serving as a traditional map. Emphasis is placed on the need to conduct a painstaking review of the cultural circumstances surrounding the map's creation, since changes derived from the monastic reform proposed by Benito de Anguiano presupposed a formal transformation of monasteries to adapt to emerging needs. Similarly, within the overall context of evangelizing activities performed by mendicant orders in the New World, this work highlights the association between the opening of Benedictine temples to laymen and the delayed adoption of architectural solutions in New Spain in the first half of the XVI century; such solutions were abandoned in Europe two hundred years earlier.
