This article attempts to portray the youth of Patamban, a village in Michoacán, Mexico. It offers two parallel reflections: first, a description of what it means to be young in Patamban; and second, a methodological discussion of the close ties between participant observation, interaction with the subjects studied, and the researcher's subjectivity. The article begins with a fragment of the field journal; then a methodological reflection explores participant observation and finally the meaning of being young in Patamban, the events that define this stage of life, and what characterizes these young people as a group and gender.
