This article is based on ethnographic research, using such techniques as participant observation, informal discussions, in-depth interviews, and participatory workshops, conducted from 2008 to 2009 in the Zoque community of Guayabal in the municipality of Rayón in the northern region of the state of Chiapas. The aim was to recover the visions of Zoque sociocultural identity revolving around tradition and modernity and to examine some recent historical processes that have at least partially reshaped the sense of their cultural notions and identity practices. Particular attention is paid to aspects that are constituent elements core to its group identity and to significant issues where inter-generational coincidences or discrepancies arise.
