MACUIL MARTINEZ, Raul. Building in Community: Nahua Testimonies from Atlihuetzia, Tlaxcala, in the Eighteenth Century. Estud. cult. náhuatl [online]. 2024, vol.68, pp.219-269. Epub 19-Ago-2025. ISSN 3061-8002. https://doi.org/10.22201/iih.30618002e.2024.68.78719.
The present work analyzes the first five pages of an eighteenth-century memoir, which was found in the Archive of the Fiscalía of Santa María Atlihuetzia, Tlaxcala, Mexico. This manuscript is written in the Nahuatl or Mexican language, and is the detailed record of the construction of the church dedicated to the Immaculate Conception. The edification took eight years since the works began in 1727 and was completed around 1735, when the ecclesiastical authorities granted permission for the celebration of masses in the facilities. This memoir is the detailed record of the construction of each of the architectural elements of the church, and it also registers who intervened in the work and how much was paid to master stonemasons, gilders, blacksmiths, and carpenters. Each of them was in charge of the construction of the building, as well as of the religious sculptures that are presently in the church, displayed both inside and outside the building.
