Resumen

VASQUEZ GALICIA, Sergio Ángel. The Chichihuame: Politics, Education and Identity Among the Ancient Nahua. Estud. cult. náhuatl [online]. 2024, vol.67, pp.53-83.  Epub 19-Ago-2025. ISSN 3061-8002.  https://doi.org/10.22201/iih.30618002e.2024.67.78145.

In this article the concepts of role and social function are used to study the cihuapilli who served as chichihua. The goal is to broaden the scope in the studies of Nahua women to demonstrate that their relevance was not limited to domestic chores, and the establishment of marital political alliances. Through the confrontation of works of indigenous tradition, whether pictographic or written in Nahuatl and Spanish, the importance of the chichihuame is discussed in two fields of action. First in the political field, to consider women as key players in the legitimization of power and in the formation of alliances through their work as nursemaids and tutors of future rulers. And secondly, in the educational realm, women as transmitters of the cultural traits of the toltecayotl which the Nahua integrated into their identity.

Palabras llave : chichihua; chichihuame; tlacazcaltiani; nursemaids; tutors; Nahua women; breastfeeding.
