Mexico produces around 29,013.75 tons of cocoa, 61% of which is produced in Tabasco. However, it is a crop that is affected by pests and diseases, and it is believed that it will be one of the agroecosystems most affected by climate change. Therefore, the objective of the research was to determine the diversity of Scolytinae and Platypodinae associated with a cocoa agroecosystem under sun and shade in Tabasco, Mexico, considering different environmental variables. Five ECOIAPAR traps were placed at a height of 1.5 m at each site for one year. In the sunny plantation (PSL), 1,781 individuals of 31 species of Scolytinae and two species of Platypodinae were captured. In the shaded plantation (PSM), 1,788 individuals of 27 species of Scolytinae and one species of Platypodinae were captured. The highest 1D diversity was recorded in PSL with 13.29 effective species and the lowest in PSM with 10.85. In addition, the association of 13 species of Scolytinae with T. cacao was identified. It was determined that Hypothenemus birmanus (Eichhoff) prefers low humidity and low rainfall, Hypothenemus seriatus (Eichhoff) seems to be sensitive to rainfall and Xyleborus volvulus (F.) is associated with high humidity, while Hypothenemus sp.1, Theoborus ricini (Eggers) and Xyleborus ferrugineus (F.) show preferences for high radiation. Research aimed at studying the influence of environmental variables on insects of economic importance is of vital importance, since it allows us to know the possible effects of these variables on the distribution and development of their populations, as well as providing guidelines for the development of predictive models that can be used to predict the effects of climate change on vulnerable agroecosystems.
