Abstract

BRAVO-GARCIA, Enrique  and  ORTIZ-PEREZ, Hilda. Epidemiology of infant mortality in Mexico from 1990 to 2021. Rev. mex. pediatr. [online]. 2024, vol.91, n.4, pp.142-148.  Epub Sep 29, 2025. ISSN 0035-0052.  https://doi.org/10.35366/119692.

Introduction:

the Mexican Health Sector Program 2019-2024 established the goal of reducing the infant mortality rate (IMR) to 11.08 deaths per 1,000 births by 2024.

Objective:

to analyze the magnitude, distribution and trend of infant mortality in Mexico from 1990 to 2021.

Material and methods:

descriptive study of IMR at the national level and by state, based on published national statistics. The JoinPoint segmented regression model was used.

Results:

at national level, the IMR decreased 63.7% between 1990 and 2021, although with differences in the speed of reduction in five time periods. The geographical distribution of IMR was heterogeneous: in 2021, the highest rates were recorded in Oaxaca (23.1), Guerrero (23.0), Chiapas (20.2), Michoacán (19.5) and Zacatecas (17.3); while the lowest were found in Baja California Sur (8.4), Hidalgo (8.1), Sonora (7.7), Nayarit (7.5) and Morelos (7.4).

Conclusions:

despite progress in reducing infant mortality in Mexico, the country still faces significant challenges to improve it.
