Gender roles, deeply rooted in our society, are reflected in the visual arts. This paper examines these roles in Spanish Golden Age painting, focusing on Magdalena Ventura with her Husband and Son by José de Ribera. This work challenges 17th-century ideals of femininity by depicting a woman with a beard, questioning social and cultural norms. The analysis of this work explores the representation of femininity and beauty standards of the time, highlighting its contemporary relevance. Additionally, the possible medical diagnosis of her underlying condition is investigated. This work underscores how art can challenge social norms, inviting reflection on gender identity and diversity.
