Resumen

SALVADOR-BALLESTEROS, Matías  y  FREIDIN, Betina. Sugar-sweetened beverage consumption, eating patterns, and social inequalities among adolescents in Argentina. J. Behav. Feed. [online]. 2026, vol.5, n.10, pp.25-34.  Epub 22-Mayo-2026. ISSN 2954-4947.  https://doi.org/10.32870/jbf.v5i10.109.

Unhealthy dietary habits, including the regular consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages (SSB), are a global public health concern. The issue is particularly important in Argentina as it is one of the countries with the highest SSB consumption worldwide, especially among adolescents. Adolescence is a stage in the life cycle when increasing autonomy develops over health-related behaviors, such as diet, which can pose risks to health in adulthood due to their cumulative effects. The objective of this article is to analyze the frequency of SSB consumption among adolescents aged 13 to 17 living in urban areas of Argentina during the years 2018 and 2019, according to sociodemographic variables and in relation to the frequency of consumption of other foods. A statistical analysis of secondary data was performed using a correlational and cross-sectional design. The Second National Nutrition and Health Survey (ENNyS) was used as the data source. A bivariate and multivariate analysis was performed using binary logistic regressions. The results show a higher frequency of sugar-sweetened beverage consumption among adolescents from households with lower economic and educational resources, among males, and among those residing in Greater Buenos Aires. The frequency is also higher among those with other unhealthy consumption patterns. In line with international precedents, it is concluded that frequent sugar-sweetened beverage consumption is not an isolated behavior, but rather part of integrated dietary practices that respond to cultural logics and group identities and that reproduce social inequalities.
