I was born and raised in Riohacha, La Guajira, Colombia, where I trained as a general physician at the Universidad Libre de Colombia (Barranquilla) and qualified as a specialist in Neurosurgery at Universidad de Cartagena (Cartagena de Indias), Colombia.

My interest in neurosciences arose from the first years of my studies in medicine. Afterwards, I had the opportunity to do my last year of undergraduate in research modality at the Ramon y Cajal Institute, Madrid, Spain.

During my Neurosurgery residency, I was encouraged by my professors to publish case reports and narrative reviews. I consider that this was very important in my training process. Among the fellowships I have obtained, the CNS Kenichiro Sugita International Fellowship (2008-2009) and The Crockard International Fellowship (2008) of the AANS/CNS Spine Section are included.

My main interests are neurocritical management of neurosurgical patients and neurovascular medicine, besides Preclinical models. I am currently a Cochrane member gathering evidence that allows for better clinical decision making. I have contributed, together with colleagues from Argentina, El Salvador, and Latin America, to the creation of the Latin American Neurointensive Council (CLaNi) (http://neuroclani.org) which has among its objectives the dissemination of knowledge in neurocritical medicine. On the other hand, I am the founder of the Colombian Group of Clinical Research in Neurointensive Care, recently recognized with Category C by the Minciencias (Colombia).

Currently, I also participate as a social media ambassador for the Neurocritical Care Journal(Official Journal of the Neurocritical Care Society).
