This article addresses the representations that some newspapers in Mexico and Colombia constructed around the odor identities of the youth classified as “hippies” during the rock festivals of Avándaro, in the State of Mexico, and Ancón, south of Medellín, in 1971. The objective is to analyze the ways in which the Colombian an Mexican newspapers elaborates written and visual narratives around the “hippie smells”, associated with the consumption of marijuana and the cleanliness of young bodies, within the framework of the countercultural phenomenon in Latin America, to reinforce the discourses and practices around differentiated relationships between conservative societies and countercultural youth, especially those from the lower classes.
