Resumen

SANCHEZ MUNOZ, David Alejandro. To prevent losses of gold and silver that have not paid royal taxes: Government actions to curb on mining fraud in Zimapán at mid 18th century. Oficio, rev. hist. interdiscip. [online]. 2026, n.22, pp.113-127.  Epub 12-Jun-2026. ISSN 2594-2115.  https://doi.org/10.15174/orhi.vi22.6.

The Caja Real (royal treasury) of Zimapán was established in September of 1721 to increase the collection of royal taxes on the southern Sierra Gorda silver production. This region became more attractive through that time, due to its great mining potential and the recent local native people pacification. This article shows the consequences of an inspection visit performed by a government commissioner to examine the oficiales reales (treasury officials) and the miners on suspicion of fraud committed between 1745 and 1748. Based on this, the article goes into the impact caused by the new provisions and helps to better understand how these illicit practices were considered and confronted.

Palabras llave : Sierra Gorda; gold mining; 18th century; fraud; inspection visit.
