GONZALEZ COLLAZO, Odalys; MASFERRER LEON, Cristina Verónica y RODRIGUEZ BARRAZA, Adriana. Symbolic Violence and Racism towards Afro-Mexican Women from Coyolillo. Debate fem. [online]. 2025, vol.69, e2469. Epub 13-Mayo-2025. ISSN 2594-066X. https://doi.org/10.22201/cieg.2594066xe.2025.69.2469.
The aim of this article is to identify expressions of symbolic violence towards Afro-Mexican women from the town of Coyolillo, Veracruz, to understand their relationship with racism. The methodology used was qualitative, supported by the intersectional approach. We interviewed eight Afro-Mexican women belonging to a community embroidery group. On the one hand, we detected gender mandates that demand participants’ availability to other people, and the exercise of motherhood and housework, while on the other, we identified racist discrimination and structural racism. Both experiences are examples of the symbolic violence that have impacted our collaborators’ educational opportunities and access to paid work. Based on this, we establish a link between gender mandates and racism and explain how they impact the spaces where Afro-Mexican women come together.
