Resumen

HOECHTL, Nina. Brücken Schlagen [Building Bridges]: Queerness Through Multilingualism, Ambiguity and Contradictions. Debate fem. [online]. 2025, vol.69, e2508.  Epub 13-Mayo-2025. ISSN 2594-066X.  https://doi.org/10.22201/cieg.2594066xe.2025.69.2508.

Based on excerpts from our collaborative translation commentary Grenzen übersetzen, translatorisches Handeln, Brückensprachen schaffen [“Translating Borders, Acting Translationally, Creating Bridge Languages”] of Borderlands/La Frontera: The New Mestiza (1987) by Gloria Anzaldúa, we seek to show the impact of translation commentary as a form of articulation that claims to be responsible for the construction of meaning and subjectivity in the translated text. At the same time, we attempt to lay out our strategies and explain some of the processes and concepts that intervened in the translation to subvert homogenizing tendencies based on central characteristics of Anzaldúa’s texts, shot through with multilingualism, ambiguity, and contradictions. We also ask about the extent to which the use of multilingualism made Anzaldúa’s texts such important contributions to queer studies-among others-even before they were introduced into academic spheres.
