JIMENEZ LEON, Rodolfo. Tabasco in Paris, 1889. National identity and science at a Universal Exposition. Let. hist. [online]. 2025, n.31, e7499. Epub 16-Feb-2026. ISSN 2448-8372. https://doi.org/10.31836/lh.31.7499.
This study examines the participation of José N. Rovirosa Andrade in the Universal Exposition of Paris (1889) to explain the incorporation of regional science into the Porfirian project of national identity. Using a qualitative approach with analytical and comparative methods, along with the review of primary and secondary literature, it analyses the exhibition strategies and the interventions of the institutions that brought together science, art, and archaeology in the Mexican pavilion. Rovirosa acted as a bridge between the local knowledge of Tabasco and the forms of representation at the national level, through natural samples, technical drawings, and reports. This contributed to the construction of a specific regional identity. An analytical framework of five dimensions is proposed to study how knowledge is shared and what role regional production played in cultural and knowledge diplomacy.
