SALAZAR AGUILAR, Andrea y GONZALEZ GARCIA, Juan. Deficit trade integration of Mexico with Northeast Asia: possible trends in the face of neoprotectionism. Anál. econ. [online]. 2025, vol.40, n.105, pp.61-85. Epub 11-Nov-2025. ISSN 2448-6655. https://doi.org/10.24275/uam/azc/dcsh/ae/2025v40n105/salazar.
This paper analyzes Mexico's trade complementarity and deficit with Northeast Asia (NA) and its possible trends. This region is strategic for Mexican exports with the United States of America (USA), as its first trading partner. Events such as the 2007-2009 global economic crisis, the USA-China trade war, in force since 2018, and the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, led to the resurgence of phenomena such as the relocation and neo- protectionism, which have implications for Mexico's strategic relations. Through the index of revealed comparative advantages (RCA) and the Herfindahl-Hirschman index (HHI), Mexico's specialization in sectors, such as machinery and transportation, is confirmed. It is concluded that Mexico has benefited from such events in attracting investment and its participation in supply chains, but if it does not develop a timely strategy in the face of neo- protectionism, its competitiveness runs the risk of being eroded.
