FUERTE-CELIS, María del Pilar y ZIZUMBO-COLUNGA, Daniel. Resistance to organized crime: interaction of individual, social, family and institutional coping. Estud. sociol [online]. 2025, vol.43, e2767. Epub 29-Jul-2025. ISSN 2448-6442. https://doi.org/10.24201/es.2025v43.e2767.
Individual gender displacement, common in violent societies, exacerbates women’s vulnerability leading to impoverishment, exploitation and the breakdown of their support networks. In this article we analyze the life stories of 16 women who fled organized crime in Mexico, one of the countries with one of the most severe crises of violence. Our findings challenge the idea that coping strategies -individual, familial, social, and institutional operate independently, and suggest, instead, that they interact. That is, coping depends not only on individual decisions, but also on available resources. The study extends coping theory by making more complex how women react to violence.
