Resumen

GUERRA, Edgar  y  VIRAMONTES, Dafne. Women Entrepreneurs and Uneven Development: Socio-structural Constraints in Aguascalientes. Estud. soc. Rev. aliment. contemp. desarro. reg. [online]. 2026, vol.36, n.67, e261678.  Epub 06-Abr-2026. ISSN 2395-9169.  https://doi.org/10.24836/es.v36i67.1678.

Objective:

This article examines the social, economic, and cultural factors that constrain women entrepreneurs in Aguascalientes, Mexico, and explores how these constraints influence their participation in the local economy.

Methodology:

This research, based on a case study of 15 women entrepreneurs, employs semi-structured interviews to reconstruct their entrepreneurial trajectories and experiences. Adopting an interpretive approach, it focuses on how the participants perceive and make sense of the barriers they face in their business lives.

Results:

The study highlights the enduring influence of structural and historical inequalities within Aguascalientes’s entrepreneurial ecosystem, which continues to undermine women’s business initiatives -even in the context of policy efforts aimed at fostering gender-inclusive economic development.

Limitations:

While the case study design limits the generalizability of findings, the analytical framework provides valuable insights and conceptual tools that can inform research and policy in other settings.

Conclusions:

Institutional efforts alone have not been enough to overcome deeply embedded forms of inequality rooted in family dynamics, market structures, and public institutions. Meaningful change requires broader social transformation.
