Resumen

ROJAS-ROJAS, María Magdalena; GODINEZ-MONTOYA, Lucila; VALENCIA-SANDOVAL, Karina  y  PEREZ-SOTO, Francisco. Application of the Environmental Kuznets Curve: Food, beverage, and Tobacco sector in Mexico, 1993-2022. Estud. soc. Rev. aliment. contemp. desarro. reg. [online]. 2025, vol.35, n.66, e251620.  Epub 23-Abr-2026. ISSN 2395-9169.  https://doi.org/10.24836/es.v35i66.1620.

Objective:

To analyze the relationship between Greenhouse Gases (GHGsa) as an indicator of environmental degradation and economic growth, expressed through the real Gross Domestic Product (GDPrsa) of the food, beverage and tobacco sector in Mexico.

Methodology:

Three econometric models were determined: linear, quadratic and cubic, based on official data to verify the existence of the Environmental Kuznets Curve (CKA) during the period 1993-2022.

Results:

Of the models analyzed, the cubic form one best described the relationship between GHGsa, GDPrsa, and the vector of additional variables. A positive relationship was observed between GHGsa and GDPrsa, as well as between CENERsa and ENREN, and an inverse relationship with CGini.

Limitations:

Lack of a broad historical series and additional variables that comprehensively analyze economic growth and environmental degradation.

Conclusions:

According to the available information and for the period under study, the behavior of the analyzed variables followed an Nshaped pattern, like the CKA, but with a subsequent increase in emissions at high income levels. The study offers a novel contribution by analyzing the EKC for the food, beverage, and tobacco sector, where comparable previous studies are absent.
