HERNANDEZ CRUZ, Astrid y SANTACRUZ ORTEGA, Hisila. Detection of Metals in Water through Smartphones. Epistemus (Sonora) [online]. 2023, vol.17, n.35, pp.98-106. Epub 22-Nov-2024. ISSN 2007-8196. https://doi.org/10.36790/epistemus.v17i35.299.
The interest in portable analytical instruments that allow metal detection available to more users has grown recently. Smartphones have become portable laboratories. Analytical chemistry has found in phones an opportunity to detect and quantify different analytes in real time and space without the need of developing laboratory analysis (an example is the colorimetric detection of metals in water). In this article, the scope of smartphones as tools for metal detection is presented. In addition, a case study is presented in which a biodegradable sensing film based on starch, gelatin, and a colorimetric indicator was used to detect copper, zinc, and nickel.
