Resumen

In this text we explore the collective representations and the familiar, emotional and everyday context of students from the National University (UN, Bogotá) in the middle of the 60’s and those from the University of Atioquia (EdeA, Medellin) at the beginnings of the 70’s. The resources used were two novels: Travel Companions (1991) and Mao’s forefinger (1993) in order to reconstruct the not so commonly researched context, of a social actor that traditionally has been analyzed by political and social history in Colombia. This exercise allows us to consider the private and domestic sphere, the role of emotions in the motivation for militancy, as well as to interpret the way they assigned meaning and faced the world in which they lived. It also allowed us to verify the efficiency of the use of the novel as a resource which depends more on the abilities of the researcher than on the nature of the material.
