Motherhood is a human condition and, at the same time, a socio-personal characteristic that most of the women sentenced to prison in Spain present, which determines their socio-personal needs and entails special circumstances, both in their stay in prison and in the attention, means, resources and in the implementation of prison intervention programmes. This article presents a research study with the aim of analysing the situation, the adaptation of treatment and socio-educational and support actions for mothers in prison, to improve their social reintegration processes. To this end, a qualitative case study was carried out in a Spanish prison, using semi-structured interviews. The results show the complexity and need to address motherhood in this context, not only with those who are pregnant or who have their children with them in prison, but also with the maternal relationship outside this space, in addition to the difficulties of being a woman in a system that is mostly thought of as masculine. There is also an urgent need to improve the quality of resources and socio-educational programmes that favour the exercise of motherhood, as well as re-educational and social reintegration processes.
