MONTERROSA CUBIAS, Luis Gerardo. “For the redemption of the indian”. The double integration of indigenous groups on the border of Chiapas with Guatemala: 1934-1936. Tzintzun. Rev. estud. históricos [online]. 2025, n.82, pp.233-262. Epub 30-Sep-2025. ISSN 2007-963X. https://doi.org/10.35830/hpy3e273.
This article analyzes two aspects of the integration policies promoted in 1934 by the Governor of Chiapas, Victórico Grajales. First, the factors contributing to its adoption and, second, why its implementation became violent along the border with Guatemala. Focusing on these issues, through documentation found in different archives, allowed me to go beyond the sphere of memory and discover that the integration policy constituted a response to what was known as the “Guatemalan problem” at the southern Mexican border.
