RAMIREZ CALVA, Verenice Cipatli. The Encomienda at the Time of Hernán Cortés. The Case of Ixmiquilpan. Revista Col. San Luis [online]. 2023, vol.13, n.24, 00022. Epub 27-Ene-2025. ISSN 2007-8846. https://doi.org/10.21696/rcsl132420231534.
Hernán Cortés led a large group of conquerors whom he benefited with Indian encomiendas despite the wishes of the Crown. His abrupt departure to Hibueras made evident the existence of factions that were fighting for economic and political power. In this article we analyze the reasons why the Ixmiquilpan encomienda, in the current state of Hidalgo, was reassigned to eight individuals between 1521 and 1566, as well as the disputes they had between them. We consider that the changes that occurred in the government of New Spain are the reason that explains the changes in the ownership of the encomienda. A large part of the present investigation was carried out based on the documentation generated in the legal lawsuits that the encomenderos carried out. We concluded that, although Ixmiquilpan was not a large encomienda, for its beneficiaries it made the difference between poverty and subsistence.
