FERNANDEZ FASTUCA, Lorena; SANCHEZ-ROSAS, Javier; ROJAS-TORRES, Luis  y  DIFABIO DE ANGLAT, Hilda. Styles of Thesis Supervision: Differences by Gender, Areas of Knowledge and Stage of the Doctoral Dissertation. RMIE [online]. 2023, vol.28, n.98, pp.913-935.  Epub 02-Oct-2023. ISSN 1405-6666.

This research explores and describes the differences in thesis supervision from the perspectives of supervisors and doctoral students, by gender, area of knowledge, and stage of the dissertation. The analyzed styles are directing, guiding, and non-intervening. To evaluate these styles, a survey was completed by 267 thesis supervisors and 285 doctoral students. The results indicate that both groups reported perceiving, in order of preponderance, the guiding, directing, and non-intervening styles. The area of knowledge also influences the supervisory style. For both groups, the directing style is present more in the natural sciences than in the social sciences. Doctoral students tend to need greater guidance and orientation from their supervisors, since they define their supervisors as mostly non-intervening.
