PURROY-VASQUEZ, Rubén et al. Agrobiodiversity in the backyard agroecosystem as a strategy against extreme poverty in Platon Sanchez, Veracruz, Mexico. Polibotánica [online]. 2026, n.61, pp.365-384. Epub 18-Mayo-2026. ISSN 1405-2768. https://doi.org/10.18387/polibotanica.61.21.
Mexico, rural poverty and food insecurity represent critical challenges, particularly in marginalized communities. Home garden agroecosystems (AEST) emerge as a sustainable strategy that integrates biodiversity, food security, and income generation. This study evaluates the contribution of AEST to reducing extreme poverty and their role in food security in Platón Sánchez, Veracruz. Semi-structured interviews and statistical analyses were used to document biodiversity, management practices, and the economic benefits of AEST, which are predominantly managed by women. The findings reveal high biodiversity in crops, animals, and medicinal plants, contributing to food security and household income. The biodiversity in AEST enhances self-sufficiency and resilience in the face of economic and climatic crises. Furthermore, strengthening the role of women in these systems could transform community dynamics. In conclusion, home garden agroecosystems are essential for addressing extreme poverty and ensuring food sustainability. It is recommended to implement public policies that support these systems and promote gender equity, thereby strengthening the social and economic fabric of rural communities.
