DIAZ-VASQUEZ, Manuel Antonio et al. Analysis of the structure of a forest in a southwestern region of the state of Durango, México. Polibotánica [online]. 2025, n.60, pp.91-105. Epub 10-Nov-2025. ISSN 1405-2768. https://doi.org/10.18387/polibotanica.60.6.
Conserving forest structure is essential for maintaining ecological and production functions. Periodic evaluations are necessary to understand the response of forests to natural and anthropogenic disturbances. In this study, we calculated the Margalef index, Shannon index, diameter differentiation index, height differentiation index, and dominance index for a forest in the Sierra Madre Occidental, located in the southwestern part of Durango. Data were obtained from two inventories conducted in 14 permanent research plots. Overall, the values of the calculated indices remained stable or increased in the second inventory. The low values of ecological importance indicate that the forest has few species. Nevertheless, it is recommended to conserve the forest structure by promoting the permanence of ecologically important species, as this will support the eventual use of commercial species.
