CASTELLON-OSEGUEDA, José Ricardo. Quimonos in Sonsonate. The 'ropa de China' in the interior of colonial Central America. Am. Lat. Hist. Econ [online]. 2026, vol.33, n.1, e1557. Epub 23-Feb-2026. ISSN 2007-3496. https://doi.org/10.18232/20073496.1557.
This article examines the involvement of colonial Central America in the trade of Asian goods, specifically “Chinese clothing”, on the basis of the discovery of kimonos among funerary objects from the colonial province of Sonsonate. Like them, archival documents between 1759 and 1772 are the main source for the study of the circuits and terminations of colonial trade, specifically in that part of the interior of the Kingdom of Guatemala in the second half of the eighteenth century. The article is part of larger research, but it goes ahead to expose the valuable resource of materiality to know not only the economic expressions, but also social and cultural, in the local-global relation of the little treated link between Asia and colonial Central America.
