SANCHEZ MORALES, Lorena Patricia y VALDES RODRIGUEZ, Ofelia Andrea. Contributions and limitations of coffee forest to sustainability in Coatepec, Veracruz, México. Madera bosques [online]. 2025, vol.31, e312665. Epub 08-Dic-2025. ISSN 2448-7597. https://doi.org/10.21829/myb.2025.312665.
Coffee forests are highly valued agroecosystems in Coatepec, Veracruz, Mexico, for their socio-environmental attributes. However, there is very limited information on aspects of sustainability in the municipality's coffee plantations. Due to this, the objective of this research was to estimate a sustainability index and identify the most important contributions and limitations of three coffee plantations in Coatepec, Veracruz, Mexico. The study was conducted through an evaluation using sustainability indicators grouped into four areas (environmental, economic, social, and technical), integrating a general sustainability index (IGS), with maximun value of 4.0 which is divided into four categories: from 2.1 to 2.5 slightly sustainable agroecosystem, from 2.6 to 3.0 it is strongly sustainable, from 3.1 to 3.5 it is very sustainable and 3.6 to 4.0 extremely sustainable. The results indicate that site 3 obtained the highest index (IGS=2.90), categorized as strongly sustainable, followed by site 2 (IGS=1.92) and finally site 1 (IGS=1.34), that categorize as not sustainable. Therefore, only one of the three sites estudied is considered sustainable. The most significant contributions were found in the environmental and social aspects, while the most notable limitations were identified in the technical and economic aspects.
