RIOS VAZQUEZ, Leonardo. Bernardo Reyes, a Spymaster at the Service of Porfirio Díaz. Estud. hist. mod. contemp. Mex [online]. 2024, n.68, pp.153-181. Epub 22-Oct-2024. ISSN 0185-2620. https://doi.org/10.22201/iih.24485004e.2024.68.77943.
General Bernardo Reyes was a key figure within the structure of the Porfirian State, especially in the northeastern region of Mexico. From his position, he worked to eliminate and neutralize political threats seeking to destabilize President Porfirio Díaz’s regime. To this end, he built and organized a sociopolitical network with military personnel, diplomats, police, and civilians, through which he deployed intelligence operations. Through the study of Reyes’ correspondence from the perspective of social network analysis, one can identify the web of commissioners, agents, and informants, as well as categorize the objectives of his espionage. This allows us to address a lesser-studied role of the figure: that of a “spymaster” who coordinated a significant part of the Porfirian espionage system.
