Resumen
DAVLETSHIN, Albert. Hieroglyphic Names in the Oztoticpac Lands Map and the Decipherment of Nahuatl Hieroglyphic Writing. Estud. cult. náhuatl [online]. 2025, vol.70, pp.137-195. Epub 26-Jun-2025. ISSN 3061-8002. https://doi.org/10.22201/iih.30618002e.2025.70.78747.
In the Texcocan Oztoticpac Lands Map, produced ca. 1540-1596, numerous spellings in Nahuatl hieroglyphic writing can be observed, most of which are not accompanied by glosses in Latin script. The hieroglyphs in Sections A and B are written within the land plot diagrams. The total number of spellings in Section A amounts to 59, although epigraphic analysis indicates 45 individual names, since some names appear in more than one plot, occasionally with different spellings due to the well-known variability of Nahuatl hieroglyphic writing. These results align well with a phrase written in Section A that reads ‘45 farmers’, confirming both the validity of the analysis and our current understanding of the orthographic conventions of Nahuatl writing. These findings also indicate that the inscribed hieroglyphs record the names of the farmers who worked the lands of don Carlos Ometochtli, as well as those of individuals who owned their own plots.
