MAGANA REYES, Jorge Ignacio; ARMENTA FLORES, Rómulo; HARRISON GOMEZ, Carlos y DOMINGUEZ CARRILLO, Luis Gerardo. Carotid web as origin of stroke. Acta méd. Grupo Ángeles [online]. 2025, vol.23, n.3, pp.304-305. Epub 18-Ago-2025. ISSN 1870-7203. https://doi.org/10.35366/119967.
A 40-year-old female with left TIA, in which ultrasound and CT angiography were performed, showed an ipsilateral carotid web (CW). Atypical fibromuscular dysplasia of the bulb or CW is a non-atheromatous pathology involved in the appearance of cerebral infarctions of unknown causes. Carotid CW is defined as a shelf-shaped linear filling defect in the posterior aspect of the bulb of the internal carotid artery by angiotomography or ultrasound and is increasingly recognized as a cause of recurrent stroke and/or TIA, usually cryptogenic, but the evidence remains scarce. Treatment with antiplatelet prevents strokes, but radical treatment remains surgical and/or endovascular.
