En esta conferencia el autor expone sus vivencias como médico. Sobre todo por las relaciones que se instauran con los pacientes. Relaciones confiadas y entrañables, nobles y generosas. Experiencias en los viejos hospitales con todas sus limitaciones y con la luminosa dedicación de quienes los manejaban con esfuerzo. Lugares de verdadera atención a la salud.

Ya luego hemos visto la irrupción de la administración estatal que, con sus intereses y procedimientos, puede desvirtuar el contacto humano y la preocupación primordial por el bien del enfermo y por el progreso de la medicina. Por otra parte, están los costos elevadísimos de la medicina moderna y su tendencia creciente a la tecnología, con todos sus beneficios, pero también con su despersonalización e ilusión de omnipotencia.

Se dan algunos síntomas inquietantes: los pacientes tienen una mayor expectativa de vida, cercana a los cien años. Los médicos y los hospitales son investigados por los pacientes potenciales vía internet antes de ser elegidos… Se fomenta la desconfianza. Luego han venido reformas al sistema de salud que regulan las condiciones económicas y las remuneraciones, pero en el fondo prevalece la postergación de los más pobres y la preferencia por los ricos. Y así el negocio se va apoderando de la nobleza de la medicina. Influye también el tiempo: el tiempo transcurrido, el esperado y también el dedicado a la atención de la persona. Por otra parte, está el fenómeno de las demandas de resarcimiento por mala praxis médica, que llegan a unas lamentables dimensiones económicas las cuales conducen al dramático juego de los seguros y sus consecuencias, como la medicina defensiva con sus altos costos.

Y entonces surge la pregunta de si lo primero es la atención al paciente, su persona, su salud…; de si podemos recuperar la esencia de la medicina y del actuar correcto y honorable… El camino de esta esperanza está en la dedicación plena y cordial a las personas, al hombre sufriente que pone su vida en las manos del médico.

Experiences in the old hospitals with all their limitations and with the luminous dedication of those who handled them with effort. Places of true attention to health.

Then we have seen the irruption of the state administration that with its interests and procedures can distort human contact and the primary concern for the good of the sick and for the progress of medicine. On the other hand there are the very high costs of modern medicine and its growing trend to technology, with all its benefits but also with its depersonalization and illusion of omnipotence.

There are some disturbing symptoms: Patients have a higher life expectancy, close to one hundred years. Doctors and hospitals are investigated by potential patients via the internet before being elected ... Mistrust is fostered. Then there have been reforms to the health system that regulate economic conditions and remunerations, but in the end prevails the postponement of the poorest and the preference for the rich. And so the business is taking over the nobility of medicine. Time also influences. The time elapsed, the expected and also the dedicated to the attention of the person. On the other hand there is the phenomenon of claims for compensation for medical malpractice, which reach an unfortunate economic dimension that leads to the dramatic game of insurance and its consequences as defensive medicine with its high costs.

And then the question arises whether the first thing is patient care, their person, their health... If we can recover the essence of medicine and act right and honorable… The way of this hope is in the full and cordial dedication to the people, to the suffering person who puts his life in the physician’s hands
