^les^aEl nacimiento de los primeros museos en Cuba se posibilitó, gracias al coleccionismo de historia natural desarrollado desde mediados del siglo XIX y a las gestiones privadas, de valiosas piezas de las guerras por la independencia de ese país. El proceso social que devino con el triunfo de la Revolución, en 1959, dio inicio a una profunda transformación en la proyección social de la museología en Cuba, e incentivó el rescate y conservación de valores históricos, artísticos, documentales y arquitectónicos, que hicieron necesario el surgimiento de instituciones museísticas con una nueva presentación técnica e ideológica y su correspondiente respaldo jurídico, las cuales se convirtieron, de este modo, en centros de educación permanente, en contribuyentes a la solución de los problemas sociales y culturales heredados del pasado, así como en instructoras de las nuevas generaciones de cubanos. Este reporte analiza este proceso histórico para proponer algunas reflexiones sobre el presente y futuro de los museos en Cuba.^len^aThe birth of the first Cuban museums was only possible thanks to the natural history collections developed since the second half of the nineteenth century, along with private endeavor of valuable objects from the independence wars of the country. The social process derived from the triumph of the Cuban Revolution in 1959 started a deep transformation of the social projection of museology and triggered the recovery and conservation of historical, artistic, documentary and architectural values, leading to the creation of new museums. These institutions with a fresh technical an ideological presentation and its corresponding legal support, turned out to be, in this way, permanent centers for education, helping to solve the social and cultural problems inherited form the past, as well as instructors of the new generations of Cuban citizens. This paper analyzes this historical process in order to introduce some reflections about the present and future of the museums in Cuba.
