Magnetic susceptibility pitfall is a type of chemical shift artifact in which local deformity of the magnetic field causes incorrect spatial registration of the signal. In patients with previous shoulder surgery or arthroscopy, the fine ferromagnetic particles dispersed in the tissue due to microchips from a drill bit or a bur can be confused with loose bodies or bone formation and can simulate edema or subcutaneous cellulitis. Inhomogeneity artifact appears as a hyperintense or high signal in some primary field-dependent fat-suppressed sequences.
