^les^aEste artículo busca ofrecer un rápido conocimiento de cómo surgió y se ha desarrollado el modelo educativo conocido como Educación Intercultural Bilingüe en Latinoamérica. Se apuntan los primeros antecedentes para luego describir tres etapas principales a lo largo del siglo XX, sin que ello pretenda fijar fronteras exactas, sino más bien tendencias asumidas por los diversos sistemas educativos. Para describir el momento actual, hemos establecido unos criterios que permiten observar el fenómeno desde tres ángulos diferentes pero complementarios para, de este modo, obtener una imagen integral de lo que pasa con la EIB en los países latinoamericanos: sus grandes logros, así como los grandes obstáculos que aún afectan su viabilidad y la efectividad de su implementación.^len^aThis article aims to provide a quick understanding of how the Bilingual Intercultural Education emerged and developed in Latin America. First, we point out the background and then describe three main stages throughout the twentieth century, without intending to set precise boundaries, but rather trends assumed by the various educational systems. To describe the present situation we have established criteria that allow to observe the phenomenon from three different but complementary angles and get a comprehensive picture of what happens with the EIB in Latin American countries: his great achievements as well as the major obstacles still affect its feasibility and effectiveness of its implementation.
