^les^aEn el esqueleto de la mojarra de mar Diapterus auratus sobresalen las modificaciones que permiten la gran retractilidad de la mandíbula superior, como son la notable longitud de los procesos ascendentes de los premaxilares y la formación del surco maxilar y la amplia fosa anterior del neurocráneo. La cresta supraoccipital es notablemente alta, mientras que las crestas parietales son discontinuas. De los 6 suborbitales, el tercero lleva una repisa suborbital. El miodomo se encuentra abierto posteriormente. Se reconocen dos huesos extraescapulares. Se cuentan 10 vértebras precaudales y 13 caudales, 3 supraneurales, 17 pterigióforos dorsales y 9 anales. Comparando con otros géneros de gerreidos, se reconoce una uniformidad en el número de estructuras seriadas. Se distingue a la región temporal de la cabeza como la de mayores diferencias, sin embargo, es el urohial el hueso que muestra más diferencias. Se identifica un mayor número de caracteres, que son similares a los del género Eugerres.^len^aIn the skeleton of the sea mojarra Diapterus auratus, modifications relative to the protractible upper jaw are noticeably, such as the great length of de premaxillary ascendent processes, passing through the maxillary groove and lodging in the anterior fossa of the neurocranium. The supraoccipital crest is remarkably high, while parietal crests are discontinuous. From the 6 suborbitals, the third one bears a subocular shelf. The myodomus has a posterior opening. Two extrascapular bones are present. Ten precaudal and 13 caudal vertebrae, 3 supraneurals, 17 dorsal and 9 anal pterygiophores are counted. Comparing with other gerreid genera, a homogeneity in the number of repeated structures is recognized. The temporal region of the head is where most differences are found; however, urohyal is the more variable bone among genera. More characters similar to those of Eugerres are identified.
