^les^aEste artículo investiga las transformaciones que tuvieron lugar en los últimos años en la ciudad de Buenos Aires, tomando el caso del cirujeo (recolección informal de residuos). Desde un trabajo etnográfico y el análisis de estadísticas y documentos, se analiza cómo los cartoneros se apropian del espacio urbano central de la ciudad y cómo enfrentan a los estereotipos sociales que los estigmatizan. Se da cuenta de los usos y estrategias que elaboran para en frentar y convivir con la diferencia social.^len^aThis article explores transformations occurred in the past fifteen years in the city of Buenos Aires, taking the case of cirujeo (informal waste collection). In this ethnographic, statistical and documentary analysis undertaken the main objective is to understand the way cartoneros or garbage pickers appropriate the city's central urban space and deal with the social stereotypes that stigmatize them. The author describes the forms and strategies they devise to cope and coexist with social difference.
