El desmesurado crecimiento del Imperio Romano, entre otros factores, causó que la lengua, la religión y las costumbres de los habitantes de sus diversas provincias fueran haciéndose progresivamente diferentes; esa diferencia, que constituye uno de los motivos que dieron origen al desmembramiento de dicho Imperio, es palpable en dos obras, el De reditu suo y la Peregrinatio ad Loca Sancta, escritas a finales del siglo IV o comienzos del V de nuestra era, por Rutilio Namaciano y Egeria, respectivamente.

The inordinate growth of the Roman Empire, among other factors, determined the progressive diversification of the language, religion and customs of the inhabitants of its various provinces. This divergence, one of the motives that resulted in the dismemberment of the Empire, is palpable in Namatianus’ De reditu suo and in Egeria’s Peregrinatio ad Loca Sancta, both written towards the end of the fourth century or beginning of the fifth century CE.
