Abstract.

Digitalized data from different collections and information from the literature were analyzed to document the diversity of velvet ants of Mexico. A checklist of 369 species was compiled. This work has contributed to increasing the known species of Mexico by 40.30%. The most species-rich genus is Dasymutilla with 114 species and the less species-rich genera are Hoplognathoca, Myrmosula and Pertyella with one species each. The states with the most genera are Sonora, Chihuahua, and Coahuila and those with the most species are Sonora, Baja California, and Chihuahua. This study represents the first attempt to integrate information on the velvet ants occurring in Mexico and their geographic distribution per state.

Introduction

Velvet ants belong to the family Mutillidae (Hymenoptera). Hanson & Gauld (2006) estimated that the family consists of at least 10,000 species worldwide. More recent studies suggest around 4,300 and 4,603 species around the world (Brothers & Lelej, 2017; Pagliano et al., 2020). There are eight subfamilies within the Mutillidae (Brothers & Lelej, 2017; Pagliano et al., 2020), but only Myrmosinae, Sphaeropthalminae and Mutillinae occur in the New World (Manley & Pitts, 2002). Mutilla europaea Linnaeus, 1758 was the first velvet ant described and this genus was used to encompass all the known velvet wasp species at that time. Thus, the genus Mutilla was considered the most extensive and cosmopolitan genus within Aculeata. In fact, some of the first descriptive works that included Mexican species were placed in Mutilla (Blake, 1871; 1886) or Sphaeropthalma (Blake, 1871). However, advances in the taxonomy of velvet ants have allowed many species previously recognized within Mutilla or Sphaeropthalma to be placed in other genera such as Ephuta Say, 1836; Dasymutilla Ashmead, 1899; Pseudomethoca Ashmead, 1896; and Timulla Ashmead, 1899, which occur in Mexico.

Much of the recent knowledge about the diversity of velvet ant species in Mexico comes from various types of taxonomic information, such as descriptions of new taxa or taxonomic revisions (Manley & Pitts, 2007; Pitts, 2007). Pagliano et al. (2020) attempt to integrate the diversity of the world’s velvet ants by mentioning the distribution of species at the country level. After the work of Pagliano et al. (2020), there is no integrative approach that includes an updated checklist of the velvet ants of Mexico.

Mittermeier et al. (1997), suggest that Mexico holds about 10 percent of the biodiversity of the world, at least in some groups such as mammals, birds, reptiles and plants. According to Pagliano et al. (2020), the number of velvet ants known for Mexico is 265 (plus 23 incertae sedis species and a nomen dubium). In this sense, whatever the reasons, the diversity of velvet ants occurring in Mexico seems to be underestimated. The aim of this work is to provide an integrative analysis of the velvet ants of Mexico and create the first checklist of velvet ants of the country with annotations on their distribution by state.

Materials and methods

To document the diversity of velvet ants of Mexico, the previous work on the catalogue of the velvet ants of the Neotropical region, including Mexico (Nonveiller, 1990) and that of the World (Pagliano et al., 2020) were used as basis. The checklist was generated in alphabetical order but following the classification and nomenclature of the velvet ants used by Pagliano et al. (2020). Synonyms are included. The section named “Distribution” contains the name of the state where the species occur. The new records for Mexico were marked in bold in the checklist and the incertae sedis species and a nomen dubium are shown at the end of the checklist. (See Appendix A). Two maps of Mexico were created to show the richness of genera and species for each state in a color gradient.

Two sources of information were used to generate the checklist. In the first place, specialized literature coming from general catalogues or monographs (Blake, 1871; Blake, 1886; Krombein, 1979; Nonveiller 1990) as well as different taxonomic works focused on specific groups of velvet ants, like those on Dasymutilla (Manley & Pitts, 2002; Manley & Pitts, 2007; Williams, 2023) Odontophotopsis (Pitts, 2007), Invreiella (Quintero & Cambra, 2011; Waldren et al., 2020), Sphaeropthalma (Schuster, 1958; Pitts, 2006), Acrophotopsis (Pitts & McGugh, 2002), Lomachaeta (Pitts & Manley, 2004; Williams & Pitts, 2007; Williams & Pitts, 2009; Williams et al., 2019), Lophostigma (Quintero & Cambra, 1996), Acanthophotopsis (Tanner et al., 2009), Silvorientilla (Williams et al., 2018) and Dilophotopsis (Wilson & Pitts, 2008).

The second source of information came from digitalized databases. The databases consulted were the following:

Results

A total of 369 species of velvet ants distributed in three subfamilies and 19 genera were registered. The checklist adds 106 new records compared to those obtained in Pagliano et al., (2020), which represents an increase of 40.30% of species richness. The subfamily Sphaeropthalminae was represented with 16 genera and 303 species, the Mutillinae was represented with two genera and 65 species and the Myrmosinae was represented with one genus and one species (Figs. 1-2).

Figura 1 Pie diagram showing the percentage of genera per subfamily.

Figura 2 Pie diagram showing the percentage of species per subfamily. Note: The subfamily Myrmosinae represents 0.2%.

The number of genera per state was highly biased, with some states much better represented than others. An extreme example is that between Sonora and Tlaxcala with 13 and zero genera respectively as shown in in the bar graph (Fig. 3) and the map that shows the number of genera per state in a color gradient (Fig. 4).

Figura 4 Map of Mexico showing the number of genera per state in a color gradient.

The number of species per state was also highly biased. For example, there were 94 species recorded for Sonora while zero species have been recorded for Tlaxcala (Figs. 5-6).

Figura 6 Map of Mexico showing the number of species per state in a color gradient.

The most species rich genus was Dasymutilla with 114 species, while Myrmosula, Hoplognathoca and Pertyella were represented by one species each (Fig. 7).

A total of 41 species are known for Mexico, but with no additional information on the state they occur.

Discusion

Due to its geographical location and the meeting of the Nearctic and Neotropics, Mexico is one of the so-called megadiverse countries, with many different ecosystems and a great diversity of species, making it one of the most biodiverse countries in taxonomic groups such as mammals, reptiles, amphibians and plants (CONABIO, 2008). However, with regard to the data on velvet ants obtained in this paper, this does not appear to be the case. In a study of velvet ants, Menard and Mitchell (2013) recorded 98 species in 10 genera for the state of Oklahoma, USA. This state has a very similar size to the Mexican state of Sonora with 181,037 km² and 179,355 km² respectively. These authors mention that there is a bias in the collection, as some districts are much better represented than others. They conclude that a greater effort would significantly increase the diversity of ant species in the state. Sonora was the state best represented in terms of number of genera (13) and species (94), which is very similar to Oklahoma. However, many of the species found in Sonora came from the same locality or from localities very close to each other. Some localities that occur frequently in the material studied are, for example, Álamos, Desemboque and Bahía de San Carlos, so, as in Oklahoma, there are still large unexplored regions where there are no collection efforts.

The number of species per genus correlates with other biological groups, i. e. there are some species that are numerically more dominant than others. For example, within the family Cleridae (Coleoptera), the genus Cymatodera Gray, 1832 is represented by 118 species in Mexico, while other genera such as Isoforma Opitz, 2015 are represented by one species (Araujo-Castillo et al., 2024). However, the geographical distribution of the genera and species of velvet ants found in this work differs considerably from other groups. The ants are better known in the states of Veracruz and Chiapas (Dáttilo et al., 2019), while the beetles are better known in the states of Chiapas, Oaxaca and Veracruz (Araujo-Castillo et al., 2024), in contrast to the velvet ants, which are better represented in the northern states of Mexico such as Sonora, Baja California, and Chihuahua.

Possible explanations for these patterns can be through the so-called “shortfalls” (or lack of knowledge on biodiversity) (Hortal et al., 2015). The most direct are the Linnean and Wallacean shortfalls. For example, lack of knowledge of the number of velvet ant species for Mexico (Linnean) is a consequence of those yet to be collected in remote areas, and those already collected, but in need to be described or treated taxonomically. Pagliano et al., (2020) recognized 265 species of velvet ants for Mexico, however, two of them are now synonyms, reducing the number to 263 species.

The Wallacean shortfall refers to the lack of knowledge on the geographical distribution of species. In general, this shortfall is a consequence of the influence of the capabilities and efforts of scientists, resulting in geographic biases on the distribution of species. In this regard, most of the new discoveries reported in this paper are species whose natural geographic range overlaps between some states of the United States and Mexico. Historically, there have been taxonomists in the United States who have contributed to the knowledge of this group, while Mexico was hardly known, with most of the knowledge of Mexican velvet ants coming from the studies of American taxonomists.

Another shortfall is the Hutchinsonian, which refers to the gaps of knowledge of species´life histories, functional roles and responses to habitat changes. According to the patterns of velvet ants for Mexico, it is hypothesized that the most diverse genera (Dasymutilla and Sphaeropthalma), both members of the subfamily Sphaeropthalminae, have recently diversified in the deserts of North America due to cyclical climatic changes in the Pleistocene, producing species that now live in the Chihuahuan or Sonoran Desert (Pitts et al., 2010).

A fulfilling of these gaps will enable a better understanding of the richness of the velvet ants in Mexico. Certainly, an increase in collecting activity focused on local and global inventories and the training of specialized taxonomists will lead to a much better understanding of the taxonomy and other possible studies of the Mexican velvet ants.
