Revista Mexicana de Medicina Familiar (RMMF) is an electronic publication, open access (without cost for authors and readers) that is published quarterly. It is the official scientific and academic publication of Federación Mexicana de Especialistas y Residentes en Medicina Familiar A.C., an organization of family doctors that legally integrates the Medical Societies of this profession under the laws of the United Mexican States. The Journal has the general objective of being a model of encouraging scientific publication, that disseminates through quality writings, originality and applicability, current knowledge in family medicine in the fields of health care-sickness, research, management and medical teaching A publication that guides and forms criteria among professionals responsible for solving health problems of individuals, families and the community. The journal is addressed to professors, students of Medicine, Nursing, Nutrition, social work, Psychology, Stomatology at technical level, undergraduate or postgraduate, doctors or related professionals in daily practice and managers responsible for the public or private health system. To this end, the journal will consider contributions in the following sections:
PREPARATION AND SUBMISSION OF MANUSCRIPTS Manuscripts must be uploaded in electronic form through the editorial system at http://publisher.revistamexicanademedicinafamiliar.permanyer.com where the corresponding author should register as an author in the platform. Once this author has obtained a username and password, the documents should be uploaded following the instructions. All articles must include, without exception, Spanish and English titles, as well as a short title, of no more than 40 characters with spaces, name and surname(s) of each author (without titles or positions), ascriptions, name and address of the corresponding author, Spanish and English abstracts with their key words, the full manuscript, funding and conflicts of interest statements, ethical disclosures, references, tables and figure footnotes. Texts must be submitted in Microsoft Word format and be correctly written in Spanish. Articles must be presented double-spaced, in Times New Roman 12 font and with each section starting on a new page, which will be numbered consecutively, starting with the front page. The number will be placed at the top of each page. Abstract in Spanish This abstract will be presented in a maximum of 200 words, indicating the purpose of the research; basic procedures (sample selection, observational and analytical methods); main findings (specific data and, if possible, their statistical significance); as well as relevant conclusions and originality of the research. In the end, 3 to 6 keywords will be entered to facilitate inclusion in international indexes. We recommend using the terms from the Medical Subject Headings of the most recent Index Medicus. Abstract in English This abstract will be presented in a maximum of 200 words, using the same characteristics of the Spanish abstract. It will begin with an English language version of the title. It will also contain 3 to 6 keywords. To ensure quality, we suggest having this paragraph reviewed by an experienced translator. Introduction It must include background information, approach to the problem and purpose of the study, all clearly worded and well supported by the bibliography reviewed. Material and methods The characteristics of the sample and the methods used, with relevant references, will be clearly marked so that reading of this chapter allows similar studies to be conducted by other researchers. The statistical methods used must be marked with their corresponding reference. The authors must detail in this section the ethical procedures followed; necessary for experiments with animals, patients, confidential data management, informed consent, etc. Moreover, that they have obtained the corresponding authorization by the ethics committee of their institution. Results The main findings of the study must be included and may be compared only with figures or graphics which are strictly necessary and are intended to extend the information contained in the text. Do not repeat information in the body of the text and the tables and/or figures. Discussion The results must be contrasted with the information reported in the literature, and with the objectives and hypotheses expressed in the work. Conclusions In this section, authors must summarize the main conclusions of their study and the future recommended studies in case conclusions are preliminary. Conclusions should be congruent with the objectives of the study, and they should be directly originated from the reported results. Acknowledgments This section will contain acknowledgments to individuals and institutions, as well as financing sources. This section belongs to the first front page in order for the main text file to remain anonymous. References These will be presented in accordance with the Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals (International Committee of Biomedical Journal Editors). References will be marked with consecutive Arabic numerals, sorted in the order in which they first appear in the text. They will be referred to in the text, tables, and figure footnotes with the corresponding numbers. In quotations with multiple authors (more than six authors), only the first 3 authors of the work must be included, followed by et al., after the abbreviation of the name/s of the 6th author. Tables They must be double-spaced and consecutively numbered in Arabic characters, in the order quoted in the text, with the titles in the top and the meaning of abbreviations as well as explanatory notes in the footer. They must be included at the end of the manuscript, after the references section. Figures or graphs Figure footnotes must be written double-spaced and it must contain the information needed to correctly interpret the figure without resorting to the text. Although images can be in color, footnotes should not mention colors as it may be printed in grey scale. Instead, characteristics such as arrow's sizes or location (left, right, top, bottom) could be mentioned. The text must reference them in order. Qualities: The graphics, layouts and drawings must be generated in high-resolution graphics programs (JPG, TIFF, EPS, PowerPoint and Illustrator). All iconography must be original. Where this is not the case, the source reference must be quoted, and the author must obtain prior permission of the relevant publisher. In the figures, data already written in the text will not be repeated. Photographs of objects must include a rule to calibrate the reference measurements. In microphotographs, the microscopic magnification or reference micron bar must appear. The patient’s name, face, data or any other recognizable feature will not be shown in the figures. We suggest that authors add illustrations that enrich the text.
ETHICAL CONSIDERATIONS Ethical disclosures With regard to potential conflicts of interest, individual right to privacy and data confidentiality, as well and human and animal rights, the journal adheres to the latest version of the Recommendations for the Conduct, Reporting, Editing and Publication of Scholarly Work in Medical Journals (formerly the Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts) published by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors, found at http://www.icmje.org. Copies will be required of informed consent forms in the case of studies in patients and clinical cases, and of the letter from the Independent Ethics Committee of the corresponding institution in the case of clinical and experimental studies. Human procedures must comply with the ethical standards of the Helsinki Declaration of 1975 (World Medical Association Declaration of Helsinki) Ethical Principles for Medical Research involving human subjects. JAMA 2000, 284:3043-5. Also, with the agreements given by the Ministry of Health, published on January 26, 1982 and the Rules for Ethics and Research from the institution where the study originated. Animal studies should follow similar guidelines (Institute of Laboratory Animal Resources, National Research Council. Guide for the care and use of laboratory animals. Washington, DC. National Academy Press, 1996). Regarding the confidentiality of data, you should inform on how the anonymous status of the participants and the confidentiality of their information were protected. Conflicts of interest Authors must describe any financial or personal relationship with any other person or organization, which can cause a conflict of interest regarding this article. To promote the transparency and quality of the research, the authors will be asked as an essential requirement to self-assess adherence to the relevant international guidelines according to the type of study: – Clinical trials: CONSORT (http://www.consort-statement.org/). In addition, all trials must be registered in one of the international databases, and the corresponding registration number must always be indicated. – Observational studies: STROBE (www.strobe-statement.org). – Diagnostic tests: STARD (www.equator-network.org/reporting-guidelines/stard/). – For other types of studies, consult the guidelines on the EQUATOR initiative (http://www.equator-network.org/).
TYPES OF ARTICLES Editorial (by editor’s invitation) This article includes opinions on short-term reflections or current issues, messages or observations about the journal itself. They are short writings, with a synthetic title that reflects the content. The suggested length is 1,500 words. Original article Journal’s section for original research papers. Original articles present the results of clinical or basic research. The maximum suggested length is 3,500 words, bibliography included, 6 figures or 6 tables and 45 references. Historical article for Family Medicine Section that describes a relevant historical topic for Family Medicine; the article can be original or previously published in another medium, as long as it has the consent of the editor and the corresponding author. The maximum length is 3,000 words, bibliography included, 6 figures or 6 tables. Essay These are works that imply critical analysis, evaluation with scientific thesis evidence or arguments about a topic of educational interest, of daily medical practice, service management or research. They have the purpose of forming a wide criteria with different approaches of one or several disciplines of the same subject. Essays are intended to develop applicable competencies with reasoned arguments in any health care scenario. Essays include: Objective, Introduction, Discussion and Conclusions. The maximum length is 5,000 words, bibliography included, 6 figures or 6 tables. Clinical case Only those clinical cases that gather methodological criteria for the clinical history will be admitted, in order to support the central theme of health/illness that communicates the work of the family doctor in everyday life, of severe or chronic cases. Its content includes Introduction, Purpose, Epidemiology, Definition and Description of the studied syndrome (if applicable), according to the available scientific evidence. Report of the clinical case to be communicated from the outpatient clinic, which includes clinical, laboratory or cabinet diagnosis, as well as therapeutic management, evolution and continuous care. It should relate to a nosological entity and emphasize why it is relevant in outpatient care. Finally, conclusions and bibliographic references. Clinical cases with a predominant educational purpose must adhere to being presented with the case objective, a teaching/learning strategy and an evaluation. This should be a useful section for teachers to communicate or share the contributions used in their practice such as those clinical cases used in learning, based on problem solving or for analysis and discussion of cases. The use of synoptic tables and conceptual maps and even checklists or evaluative scales is encouraged. The maximum length is 3,000 words, bibliography included, 6 figures or 6 tables. Special case / family case It will be a priority in the selection, those cases whose intention is to present family study approaches from the anthropological, sociological, economic, psychological, systemic and communicational point of view; or, the establishment of integrative contributions of those disciplines that allow to attend health for the diagnosis benefit, prevention, pharmacological / non pharmacological treatment, rehabilitation, among other actions. Continued care or comprehensive management and monitoring plans, as well as, demonstrating the author's expertise in the development of a family health study for teaching purposes, research or service provision, consider that the criteria mentioned in clinical cases apply too. Partial studies will be admitted if they have an explicit purpose and proposal. The maximum length of the study will be 5,000 words, bibliography included, 6 figures or 6 tables. The editors reserve the right to propose more specificity to the author. Therapeutic news News in clinical and organizational management, section of descriptive works whose objective is to communicate current research results that the Editors consider innovative and that offer scientific evidence or useful and transcendent recommendations for clinical practice, health education or management organization for Family Medicine research. The use of algorithms, concept maps or diagrams is allowed. In any case, in addition to offering the reader recent information, those with a multidisciplinary and global vision of the subject will be preferable. The maximum length is 3,000 words, bibliography included, 6 figures or 6 tables. Symposium, workshop, round table It will be the Editorial Board or the Federation’s duty, to commission or carry out, through these didactic techniques, the analysis and synthesis of some controversial topic or topics in Family Medicine. We are looking forward to get a product that contributes to form expanded and applicable criteria in clinical-family practice, management, research or medical teaching. In general, this section is reserved to the opinion of a group of experts through debate about a relevant topic, methodologically supported by these teaching methods. The maximum length is 5,000 words, bibliography included, 6 figures or 6 tables. Axiology in Family Medicine This section is reserved to stimulate communication in the main values or virtues in the Family Medicine practice, including the basic ones of beneficence, non-maleficence, autonomy and justice. The review of family cases, in which the continuous and integral care in the individual and his family, highlight the role of the family physician in the face of ethical dilemmas, such as: counselor, as educator and of course, provider of medical care. The use of synoptic tables and conceptual maps is allowed. It is about promoting a practice of evidence-based medicine and value-based medicine. The maximum length is 3,000 words, bibliography included, 6 figures or 6 tables. Bibliographic review It is intended to talk about new books or fundamental works in the professional practice of Family Medicine. They must be critical and include the bibliographic record of the publication the author is referring to: author, year, book title, place, editorial, and number of pages. The maximum length of these works is 1,500 words, a small table or a figure. Current news on regulations and laws This section will present in length or in synthesis (depending on the importance and feasibility of the content): innovations, modifications or provisions that affect or modify the family medicine practice, whether in the service provision field, clinical management, research or teaching. The maximum length is 3,000 words, bibliography included, 6 figures or 6 tables. Biographical recognition memorial This section intends to communicate biographies of prominent family doctors or professionals from other disciplines due to their contributions to medicine and particularly to this specialty. It is dedicated to the recognition of good medical performance as it is being constant and discrete and endorsed by peers. Maximum length of 3,000 words, bibliography included, 6 figures or 6 tables.
