No obstante, la inflamación que genera el láser aún es motivo de investigación. El objetivo de este estudio fue medir marcadores inflamatorios clave en el humor acuoso de pacientes con cataratas nucleares, después de exponerlos a láser de femtosegundo.  Método: Se estudiaron 67 ojos de 67 pacientes con catarata nuclear (LOCS III NO3) tratados mediante facoemulsificación; en 34 se empleó láser de femtosegundo para realizar las incisiones, la capsulotomía y fracturar el núcleo y 33 recibieron facoemulsificación estándar. Al iniciar la cirugía, recolectamos muestras de humor acuoso en condiciones estériles a través del puerto lateral; las muestras se obtuvieron ocho minutos después del tratamiento con láser. Medimos PgE2 por ELISA competitivo, IL-1 &#946; e IL-6, a través de matrices de perlas citométricas; realizamos análisis estratificados y ajustados por covariables en SAS v.9.4.  Resultados: Hubo un aumento significativo de PgE2 (diferencia de medias ajustadas: 3.24, error estándar [ES] 1.57, p = 0.0001) e IL-6 (diferencia de medias ajustadas: 3.40, ES 0.37, p = 0.0001) en el grupo de láser en comparación con el de facoemulsificación convencional. No hubo diferencia significativa en los niveles de IL-1 &#946; entre los grupos. Además, no existió correlación entre IL-6 y PgE2 agrupadas (p &gt; 0.10) ni estratificadas por grupo (p &gt; 0.10).  Conclusión: Los casos expuestos a láser de femtosegundo tienen un aumento significativo de IL-6 y PgE2 durante los primeros pasos del abordaje quirúrgico. Las posibles implicaciones clínicas de estas elevaciones en los resultados visuales justifican estudios futuros.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract  Objective: Femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery (FLACS) is a treatment with increasing popularity. However, inflammation generated by the laser remains a subject of research. This study aimed to measure key inflammatory markers in the aqueous humor of patients diagnosed with purely nuclear cataracts after femtosecond-laser (FL) exposure.  Method: We performed a study of 67 eyes of 67 patients diagnosed with nuclear cataracts (lens opacity classification system III NO3) undergoing phacoemulsification. Of these, 34 eyes underwent FL to build incisions, capsulotomy, and nuclear fracture and 33 had standard phacoemulsification (PE) cataract surgery. At the beginning of the surgery, we collected aqueous humor samples under sterile conditions through a side-port incision. Samples were collected 8 min after laser treatment. We measured prostaglandin E2 (PgE2) by competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, interleukins (IL)-1 &#946;, and IL-6, through cytometric bead arrays. We performed stratified and covariate-adjusted analyses in SAS v.9.4.  Results: There was a statistically significant increase of PgE2 (adjusted mean difference: 3.24, standard error [SE] 1.57, p = 0.0001) and IL-6 (adjusted mean difference: 3.40, SE 0.37, p = 0.0001) in the FLACS group compared to conventional PE. There was no significant difference in IL-1 &#946; levels between groups. Also, there was no correlation between IL-6 and PgE2 grouped (p &gt; 0.10) or stratified by groups (p &gt; 0.10).
