El objetivo es definir los efectos de la vacunación en el COVID-19 severo.  Material y métodos:  estudio descriptivo, trasversal, retrospectivo en expedientes de pacientes con COVID-19 severo en el periodo del 1o de enero de 2020 al 31 de diciembre de 2021. Se extrajo la información referente a las características demográficas y clínicas y el estado de vacunación para realizar el análisis estadístico.  Resultados:  378 casos cumplieron criterios de inclusión, 280 hombres y 98 mujeres; edad promedio de 52 años; 326 casos sin vacunación, 24 parcialmente vacunados y 28 totalmente vacunados; 266 fallecimientos dentro de los 28 días.  Conclusión:  La vacunación contra COVID-19 disminuye el riesgo de enfermedad severa en personas sanas, jóvenes y en hombres. La hipertensión arterial e inmunosupresión incrementan el riesgo de agravamiento del COVID-19 aun en presencia de vacunación.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract:  Introduction:  the Intensive Medicine Department of the Central Military Hospital became a national reference center for patients with severe and critical COVID-19. The objective is to define the effects of vaccination in severe COVID-19.  Material and methods:  descriptive, cross-sectional, retrospective study, in records of patients with severe COVID-19 in the period from January 1, 2020 to December 31, 2021, information regarding demographic and clinical characteristics and the state of vaccination to carry out the statistical analysis.  Results:  378 cases met the inclusion criteria, 280 men and 98 women; average age 52 years; 326 cases without vaccination, 24 partially vaccinated and 28 fully vaccinated; 266 deaths within 28 days.  Conclusion:  vaccination against COVID-19 decreases the risk of severe disease in healthy, young people and in men. Arterial hypertension and immunosuppression increase the risk of aggravation of COVID-19 even in the presence of vaccination.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="pt"><p><![CDATA[Resumo:  Introdução:  o Departamento de Medicina Intensiva do Hospital Militar Central tornou-se um centro de referência nacional para pacientes com COVID-19 grave e crítico. O objetivo é definir os efeitos da vacinação em casos graves de COVID-19.  Material e métodos:  estudo descritivo, transversal, retrospectivo, em prontuários de pacientes com COVID-19 grave no período de 1o de janeiro de 2020 a 31 de dezembro de 2021, extraíram-se informações referentes às características demográficas, clínicas e do estado da vacinação para realizar a análise estatística.  Resultados:  378 casos preencheram os critérios de inclusão, 280 homens e 98 mulheres; idade média 52 anos; 326 casos sem vacinação, 24 parcialmente vacinados e 28 totalmente vacinados; 266 mortes em 28 dias.  Conclusão:  a vacinação contra a COVID-19 diminui o risco de doença grave em pessoas saudáveis, jovens e homens. Hipertensão arterial e imunossupressão aumentam o risco de agravamento da COVID-19 mesmo na presença de vacinação.]]></p></abstract>
